Review # 1 was written on 2020-05-08 00:00:00 Eldon Kochab I picked up this oversized coffee table book expecting a bevy of full page prints of Smith's photography. there's little of that presentation and a biography takes up nearly 80 pages. this is helpful understanding his loves, hus passion for music and contentious relationship with commercially motivated employers. Smith was a Steinbeck of the camera seeking a poetic view of social realism to celebrate the noble, assault war and even improve lives as he did for the mercury -poisoned people of Minamata.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-03-02 00:00:00 Song Yu This book takes me back to junior year in college. I was taking a visual communication course, the first course I had with my academic advisor in my journalism program. We each had to pick an artist/visual communicator from a list she drew up and then write a huge paper on that person. I selected Norman Rockwell. I scoured libraries for books on NR, and couldn't find what I needed to write the 15 page paper. Two days before the paper was due, I switched to Dorothea Lange. I found this book in the Art Library, along with several others, and in less than two days pumped out a 17 page paper. The photographs coupled with Lange's biographical information make this book very user friendly. I enjoyed the set up so much, that when I stumbled across the book at a Half-Price Books store during my senior year, I promptly purchased it. Lange's photographs are so powerful, that I still pick it up occassionally just to flip through it and take in the power of her lens.
