Cuff focuses on three case studies in Los Angeles but, like any good study, this extends to encompass specific issues present in any large-scale urban endeavor and, especially, those centered on the relatively short-lived public housing campaigns pre and post-WWII. To give variability, she cites an early realized project, a slightly later unrealized project (well, for public housing anyway - it became Dodger Stadium and the attendant asphalt), and the (I think) ongoing Playa Vista saga, thus shedding light upon the increasing complexities and policy/attitude reversals that accompany large endeavors. The format of the book is broken down into numerous sub-chapters which, like a magazine, allows one the possibility of a five minute read without getting lost mid-stream. I also appreciated the footnote system where books are referenced in parenthesis and only footnotes with further explanation have to be referenced. There was a bit of repetition throughout the writing (yes, any large-scale urban scheme necessarily requires the disruption and dispossession on numerous smaller properties...got it already), no doubt to emphasize the primary points and possibly to benefit those who invest an hour into the book to get information to throw into a term paper. But as to the content - a "good read" with ample research successfully fused with general observations and supporting examples.

A truly interesting book. How to redesign and re-purpose blighted neighborhoods in a huge metropolis? Professor Cuff describes how it was done here in Los Angeles. Among the five projects examined here, the scouring of the Chavez Ravine is just about the saddest: Remove the low rent shacks inhabited by (Brown) families, promise new subsidized housing, take years to move forward with the plan then pull the old switch-a-roo and erect Dodger Stadium instead of housing for the poor.
