How can you go wrong combining dinosaurs & Indians (Native Americans)? Giambastiani writes a most entertaining-and thought-provoking-alternate history with his Fallen Cloud Saga. Being a fan of the genre of alternate history ( Turtledove,Stirling, deCamp's "Lest Darkness Fall," Dick's "The Man In the High Castle, etc.),I have enjoyed this series greatly. In this book, the 3rd of the series, it is 1889. George A. Custer is the President, and the United States has not reached to the Pacific, California is still a part of "New Spain." A great inland sea extends from the present-day Gulf as far north as present-day Nebraska ( and several species of dinos live on the shores of this sea) and the Cheyenne Alliance has managed to hold off the expansion of the USA. The protagonist of the story is Custer's son, George Jr. On a military mission, young Custer's dirigible crashed on the Plains and he became a captive of "the People," as the Cheyenne call themselves. Custer adapted to the Indians' way of life and even came to fight for them. One of the things I like about the series is how Giambastiani brings to life the society and culture of the Cheyenne Nation. In the third book, it looks like the Cheyenne have gained an important ally-Spain. Under Spanish auspices, the Cheyenne send a delegation to Washington to deal with President Custer, with George Jr. along as translator and, as a man of two worlds, invaluable advisor. Can the Indians achieve peace with "Long Hair" Custer and save their way of life? The series continues...

This is the third book in the Fallen Cloud Saga. I enjoyed it and loved returning to the world I fell in love with in the first two books. However, I'm not sure if it was because a year has past since I've read the second book but I didn't feel as engaged as I had with the others. Still, this was a fascinating read and hard to put down. I have book four somewhere and will read it when I find it.
