It is a historical account of the development of the science of serology and the beginning of immunodiagnostics spanning 100 years from the 1850s through approximately the 1950s, focusing mostly on the build up to and the work of Karl Landsteiner and his colleagues in the elucidation of the ABO and Rh blood typing using prevelently in clinical blood banking and transfusion. The thesis of this work is that two schools of thought, those focused on unification and those focused on differentiation, that greatly influenced and we're contested over this 100 year span, or in other words the attempts at defining 'species and specificity' as the title illustrates. It contains a wealth of information of the subject for someone inclined academically to understand the dynamics of thought that went into these discoveries. |
