An in-depth look at the modern dieting culture, this book examines dieting in the light of its similarities to religion in regards to the concepts of self-transformation (or 'salvation') and the use of terms such as 'guilt', 'temptation', 'sin', etc. The author also looks at how feminism has affected the diet industry and possible seeds of rebellion against the perfect image we are urged to attain. Overall, it was interesting but I found it a little dry in places.

I know she disclaims this, but it really felt like she got too personally involved in the "research" to be fully objective. What I found most interesting and valuable was the fact that this was written in the 90's and how little the marketing and psychology of the diet industry have changed. Catch phrases and re-branding being used 20 years ago is the same stuff you still see everywhere, from corporate advertisements to the slightly individualized scripts used by network marketers (think your friends who sell BeachBody or Herbalife or It Works or any of those). There is nothing new under the sun. The strong parallels between past and present are what I found incredible. I expected an investigative journal piece, but felt too much conflict of interest. Interesting read, but not ground breaking.
