I have probably read thousands upon thousands of books in my lifetime, but I have to say that my all-time favorite literary character is Rumpole. If I were stuck on a desert island and could only choose one book, a Rumpole omnibus would be it. I've probably already read this book a dozen times in the past twenty five years, but over the past few weeks I have picked up Rumpole again because he offers a particular kind of comfort during difficult times - he reminds me how important, and sometimes how difficult, it can be to be oneself, despite what others think of us. Not only are these stories entertaining and funny, but to me they plomb the depths of philosophy about how to live an authentic life. Rumpole doesn't always win, and he isn't always liked, or even respected by the people around him, but he remains true to his principles regardless.

My dad sent me some of these. They're full of dad-like humor. These were fine -- rather predictable, a few somewhat amusing lines, etc. Somewhat self-aware, which helps.
