Published in 1984, the book presents a series of principles and case studies for using ecology as the basis of design. To their credit, the authors consider design over a range of scales, from individual dwellings and boats to villages, cities, and cultures. While the proposals are often dated or fanciful, some, like those for small scale aquaculture and wood-laminate sailing ships captured my interest. The age of this book is also one of its strengths. Considering how the predictions the authors make about emerging technologies and alternative design played out over the intervening 25 years adds a level of reality to a book that, if written today, I would find frustratingly optimistic. The authors were principle members of the New Alchemy Institute, which seems to have ended in 1991. More information on them, and some of the designs they worked on is available in compact form here.

Influential and inspiring, I continue to draw on the ideas and examples
