Review # 1 was written on 2010-03-24 00:00:00 Bobby Dee This Farm Sanctuary-published book can be a rather dry read, but it is nevertheless essential knowledge for anyone wishing to see a more humane future for farm animals. If you’ve ever seen video footage of obviously abusive factory farm practices and wondered, “Why is this permitted?”, Beyond the Law is the book for you. The author examines court cases and local statutes that have allowed agribusiness to appoint itself as judge and jury regarding what is considered “inhumane” when livestock are involved. The result, of course, is that virtually nothing done to a farm animal is considered inhumane, so long as the act is deemed a customary or routine practice. Most state laws explicitly exclude “routine farming practices” and farm animals from their anticruelty statutes. An interesting section contrast’s America’s animal welfare laws with those of nations with more progressive stances on farm animal treatment. Note that the information in this book is somewhat dated, as it does not include the voter-enacted propositions on behalf of farm animals in a handful of states.

Review # 2 was written on 2009-06-25 00:00:00 Thomas Steele This kind of textbook is not my cup of tea. Too many pictures, timelines, anecdotes and what have you, leave too little room for in-depth explanations.
