This book shows colored full page photos of murals and paintings drawn mainly in people's private homes. They consist of illusions - such as drawing a door on someone's wall opening into another place, often the ocean or another city. A common theme also seems to be imitation of Greek and classical styles. A great book! Now I want to do something like this in my house, once I have one someday. My favorite picture was one of a room of false mirrors drawn onto the wall. The mirrors reflect the room exactly, except for adding in a lamp that does not actually exist in the real life room. I loved the concept, but if I was ever to do something similar, I would add in something more exciting than a lamp. The murals in bathrooms were particularly beautiful, often showing glimpses into illusory worlds of oceans, ponds, lakes, and waterfalls. A great, unique art book that I am glad to have come across!

Short version: Not bad for a long magazine article, not great for a book. Long version: I wouldn't call this so much a history as an expose, a nice journalistic paddle in the shallows of what the SCA is. Every so often, O'Donnell seems to hedge in the hopes of not offending SCA folk, which can be frustrating, if understandable. Further frustration sets in when you read about a particularly interesting aspect of the Society about which O'Donnell only has superficial things to say. Certainly don't expect to hear as much about fighting as about people. Perhaps the most satisfying thing is getting the back-story on Valharic, currently King of Atlantia and soon to become the Duke he dreams of being in O'Donnell's book.
