I learnt an awful lot from this book in terms of what life was like for female convicts and, as a result, I'm now feeling very annoyed about the male-centric way that we were taught about Australia's convict past at school. I think that Damousi does a great job of showing that there was no one experience for female convicts and of tying women's experiences in with the various ideologies and discourses of the time. That said, I struggled a little with the style of writing here, especially towards the beginning of the book, before I'd adjusted to it. I feel like it could have been a little more clear. I also feel that the first part is stronger than the second, which contains a good deal of evidence, but less analysis than the first.
