this is a pretty good rundown of crusading history and historiography and of where the field stood as of 12 years ago'nice introduction and i'm generally inclined to agree with housley's conclusions

As the Crusades is one of my interest areas, I found this book very interesting for the most part. Housley explains the different ideas about how to define the crusade movement, what motivated people to go and how the crusades had a lasting impact beyond the battlefields. For those interested as much in the study of the crusades as the crusades themselves, this is a worthwhile book. If you don't want to read about how historians approach the crusade period, this might not be the book for you. If you find historiography interesting or find yourself working on a medieval MA like I am, then this is a book for you.
