Review # 1 was written on 2017-03-24 00:00:00 Daniela Rossler I called the immensely talented author of this book "friend" back in our high school days and stay in touch through a mutual friend, so of course I think the book is great from the getgo. She is the nation's leading Twain scholar, who discovered his missing play, "Is He Dead?" and brought it to the New York stage this month, to outstanding reviews in the Times and Wash. Post. The author writes highly readable scholarship and this book, developed out of her doctoral thesis, is a study of how several major fiction writers arose from origins as journalists--including Whitman, Dreiser, Hemingway and Dos Passos. I highly recommend her book "Lighting Out For the Territory," in which she recounts her adventures researching Twain around the country. Hannibal, Missouri will never be the same again.
