Review # 1 was written on 2014-10-25 00:00:00 Robert Redella I expected, in beginning this book, to read a study of specific clothing styles that were prevalent in medieval France. Instead, I found something entirely different, but more unique and thought provoking. Heller examines the often-made claim that fashion began in 1340 with the birth of the fitted style of clothing that became prevalent, and disassembles it, creating in its stead a comprehensive list of criteria which she posits must be filled in order to state that a culture has an active fashion system. Then she proceeds to examine the material culture of thirteenth-century France by virtue of these criteria. The first chapter, in which she lays out her arguments in favor of these criteria, is worth reading in its own right, as an illuminating and original way to conceptualize the idea of fashion, and what it entails. Glad I own a copy, because this is worth revisiting over and over. The sources cited are a fertile ground to go exploring some of these ideas in additional depth, also.

Paulicelli expertly carves a map of Italian fashion,illustrating its thriving in the nascent form as a shadow of high French couture in the 17th century to the uprising of fashion as a political and economical phenomenon; eventually carving a niche as the national identity of Italy with the ubiquitous "Made in Italy" labels.
