This is a collection of essays about women, mostly black women, who held leadership positions various organizations active in the Civil Rights Movement. Because it is a collection of essays by various authors, some of the essays were considerably better than others, but overall I enjoyed the book and learned a lot about the movement.

Another great work on Black women in the civil rights movement. These lesser known women like Septima Clark Gloria Richarson and Modjeska Simpkins were local activists whose efforts prepared their communities for NAACP, SCLC, SNCC and other organizations to find capable, willing and sacrificial people. A must read
