Review # 1 was written on 2016-10-05 00:00:00 Adam Cohen The first chapter is the most interesting (since it compares Taiwan's democratical process to a specific sociologist's theory) and illuminating, while the rest of the book delves into details that I likely won't remember a week from now. Not to say this is a book unworthy of reading (I learned a lot), but there are many redundancies throughout the chapters. Overall I would suggest reading chapters 1-4 if you know nothing about Taiwan, and the rest if you're interested enough. It's a good intro book. |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-08-07 00:00:00 Tamara Schwarz Diverse collection of essays covering East and Southeast Asia contemplating the notion of freedom in Western and in indigenous sense during the last centuries. Particularly insightful and entertaining essay from James C. Scott on parallels between the mechanisms of the state and scientific forestry. |
