The polemics of imagination This challenging, provocative book re-evaluates the contemporary whilst reclaiming the past. It's a source of unique, creative expression that is wonderfully rich. The arts matter because at their best they educate, extend and refine the life of feeling and open up ways of understanding through the agency of the imagination. This book extends from the dark recesses of memory and into the light of common day. The myth, archetype and history of poetry is explored; a dying art that's the greatest of its forms. There are some shifts in thinking, but an underlying logic and a consistent commitment to the primacy of the aesthetic response and the power of the imagination. This book explores the aesthetic -a basic modality of human intelligence. According to the writer, education should be concerned with promoting the intellectual and the emotional development of the whole individual -such as the arts can give. "It is only as an aesthetic phenomenon that existence and the world are entirely justified" -philosopher Nietzsche. This book concerns itself with the intellect and emotion in the arts. The meaning, depth and substance that's in a work, including its relevance, originality and expressiveness. It looks at Modernism's concept of time (to be of the moment) and how things stylistically altered. It also explores the overt and politicization of the arts. The conceptual meaning of the arts, along with their aesthetic qualities. "Economic law inevitably governs our acts and our thoughts… We must create the mass production of the spirit" -Le Corbusier, 1927 towards a new architecture The above quote explores historic determinism and Marxism. In this book one also explores iconoclastic originality and artistic experimentation, as 'all life is an echo of our first sensations'. As one writer says, 'we only have to open our eyes to transcend the fallacies of historicism.' It explores the concept of seeing art as a carrier of ideology, such as for instance with Hegel and Marx in 1800's Modernism movement. The elaboration, ambiguity and irony in writing that's so eclectic even if there can be no escape from the historicity of language. Rhetoric, appearance and style in writing is also explored, versus truth, depth and content including western philosophy from Plato to Marx. As Nietzsche says 'no true world… only a world of perspectival appearances' might therefore be true. The alteration of many practises and conventions is explored, through the changing times, (zeitgeist -mood/ feeling of a particular period in history). In this book it also reflects upon mirrors and allusions that can confuse one, including works that enhance imaginative play and memory. Apparently an artist needs to articulate through the power of the metaphor, the nature of human consciousness in connection with Sub specie aeternitatis viewed in relation to a universal perspective. This book looks at how writing re-tells the past, (as everything is intrinsically linked). And how when one tosses away emotions, feelings, images, ideas, beliefs and skills an artistic work can seem much altered. In the passages it explores the development of one's consciousness and the importance of the arts in this. For instance, with passion, fantasy, imagination, feeling, beliefs, dreams and visions. The arts were an essential part of the existential quest for meaning -sharp yet subtle. The power of exploring the world aesthetically, through sensory feeling and sensibilities is explored and how one's perception alters and is moved by art (in all its forms). "The power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel, to make you see" -Joseph Conrad Art's power to create, to fashion anew and find the writer's voice is highlighted. The fusion of imaginative consciousness and the organic structures of nature, as found/ seen in the expressive qualities of art is looked at. Finally, self-exploration and actualization in writing is looked at. This book is ideal for creative writing and English literature students, as it explores many topics essential for deep exploration and discussion. I would highly recommend it and add it to your reading list.
