I'm in love with Norwegian. I have no idea why not many people choose to learn Scandinavian languages, because they are truly mesmerising to my ears. But I guess that's their loss. :) I learn really well with the pimsleur approach. They introduce new words bit by bit, and focus on repetition to hammer the stuff into your head. They will ask you how to say this phrase in Norwegian, and you have to pause and give yourself time to think of the answer. They will play around with different examples and word orders, and you have to come up with the answer. This is the kinda repetition that works so well. Because you keep going over the words so many times, it really sticks in your memory. There are 30 lessons, and they will often revise stuff you've learnt from the previous lessons - so that way, you cannot forget. On top of that, you also learn how to form your own sentences, which is very important. You don't just wanna memorise words and phrases. You want to be able express yourself in a variety of ways. Pimsleur teaches you how to do that. I've been doing this slowly, one lesson a week, only because of my busy learning schedule with other languages. But by the end of the 30 weeks, I will be ready to start using more advanced textbooks and etc. This is an amazing foundation to Norwegian, which gives me everything I need for conversational purposes.

I've studied with several other Pimsleur language programs. This one struck me as a bit slow, but perhaps that's because there's some crossover with German. Ultimately, I didn't use the Norwegian I learned that much when I went to Norway as the Norwegians were by and large fluent in English! It was nice to know some basic courteous phrases and be able to communicate at a survival level on those rare occasions when I encountered a non-English speaker, however.
