This was an outstanding read. Cru served in the French Army throughout World War One (he was called up in August 1914 at the age of 34 and was not demobilized until August 1919) and then returned to academic life. After the war he made a study of French accounts of the war, both memoirs and fiction. War Books provides a composite view of the war, based on the many accounts which Cru read and evaluated. He writes about how those in experienced the war thought about it, and compares different sources, criticizing those he sees as presenting an unrealistic or mythologized view of combat. The latter half provides a sort of everyman's account of the war, divided thematically, quoting from those accounts he considers best. Finally, it provides a comprehensive bibliography of WW1 accounts published through 1929 (when he wrote this book) and marks the ones he considers most useful in providing a true sense of the war on the ground.
