This is a ripper of a book, and so important. First published in 1988, it is the best justification of music education I have read. It is so strong because it celebrates, stresses and justifies theory in the pedagogy, andragogy and playing of music. In other words, theory is not an abstraction or a blockage to understanding 'real music.' It is the enabler the way to think about music. Considering the age of this book, we can clearly see what has happened to music and arts education through neoliberalism. Thinking - critically and passionately engaged thinking - has been lost from our systems of education. Vocationalism has permeated all levels and strands of education. Music education has suffered as a result.

Tough, had to read Zizek to understand it, that should give an indication of its complexity.
