Some of the names mentioned in these novels are real people. That is where the similarity ends. In many ways these are modern versions of the old dime novels. The only similarity to the truth are the fact that... The author mentions real people. However if you just want to read an old fashion cowboy shoot em up, that's what these books are.

This is one of JT's finest! It is also one of the relative few which takes place on the Floating Outfit's home range of Rio Hondo County. It opens in Chicago were Lt. Ed Ballinger has finally broken the town's criminal kingpin. But when he attempts to arrest the 'Big Man' he is injured and a fellow officer killed by what Ballinger regurads as a 'lucky shot' from a visiting western gunfighter. After recovering Ballinger learns that the Big Man has set up operations in Texas and, not trusting the 'dumb hick' local law enforcement, he sets off to bring him in. Taking the part of Red Blaze in a bar fight he finds himself on the run. Red takes him to the office of his uncle, Hondo Fog, the sheriff of the neighboring county (Rio Hondo). Hondo promptly asks Ballinger for his badge and quickly sets about disproving the 'dumb hick' stereotype. After a demonstration from the Ysabel Kid, who informs Ballinger that he's slow by western standards, Ballinger realizes that it was not just a lucky shot that wounded him before. Humbled, he settles in to learn the law of the gun from the master, Dusty Fog. Later, in the proud tradition of the west, Hondo Fog heads into the neighboring county (where he technically has no jurisdiction) with an all-star posse made up of Ballinger, the floating outfit, OD Connected and Blazing B (owned by Red's older brothers) ranch hands, and Company G of the Texas Rangers (in which Danny Fog served prior to his murder). The bad guys never really stood a chance.
