c1973. Jaunty is the word that come to mind after finishing this book. I did find it difficult to know where to shelve this book as it is not really what one would describe as spec-fic but shelving it as history does not feel right especially as this is a parody of a 'great' family's history and art collection. It is packed full of humour but so cleverly done. Sir Lancaster died in July 1986 and was celebrated as one of the great English comic artists of the 20th century. The Guardian ran a splendid article in 2008 () and hopefully that revived some interest in a very under rated artist and novelist. If you can get your hands on the book, I highly recommend. 'Sir, a man who can make so prodigious a brick with such scant quantity of straw has a just claim to the amazed consideration of his fellows.'

A satirical cavalcade of English history through the story of the aristocracy, in this case Lancaster's comic creation - the Courantsdair family ("pronounced Currander"), sometime Viscounts and Earls of Littlehampton, at their country seat of Drayneflete Abbey. Lots to delight, here, with caricatures of every period from the 15th century to the swinging 60s, when Basil Cantilever, cynical architect/tycoon/Tory politician/money grubber demolishes a redundant City church of St. Ursula-inside-the Wardrobe
