1792 'the physician's first visit should be by surprise.' william pargeter was well known for his seemingly supernatural ability to cure raving maniacs simply by looking at them. a reverse evil eye. "-the maniac was locked in a room, raving and exceedingly turbulent...i then suddenly unlocked the door- rushed into the room and 'caught his eye.' in an instant the business was done. the patient was pacified." all the private madhouse doctors in those days used torture and inebriation as "cures" . pargeter pointed out that private madhouses are schemes by which normal citizens can be declared sick, "cured " of their legal rights, "cured" of all their money, tortured and drugged and humiliated until they pray for the merciful exhaustion of actual insanity to do its job. (help cope with unbearable conditions) i might finish this later
