This book is a classic of social movements literature, and contains a complex, and fascinating theoretical contribution that genuinely requires a whole book. There are, of course, conceptual issues, given that the book was written in 1973, and that the social movements literature has exploded since then, but it is absolutely a book worth reading for anyone interested in social conflict and movements. A bonus is that it has a great lit review with a classic critique of the collective behavior and functionalist traditions.

3.5 stars. Bits of this can be quite dry and dated (original publication was in the ‘50’s) but it is invaluable for insights into Willa Cather’s inspiration for characters and place in her novels.
