In the children's book, "Big City ABC," children get to learn the alphabet in a new way. Every letter begins a part of the city such as, "A is for Ally." Then it has a description of what an ally is. I found this book to be a good early reader book because children are not only learning the ABC's but they are also gaining knowledge of places and things in the city. Looking at the design elements in this book I noticed that every other page was in color, while the others were in black and white. I looked for the meaning of this, but seeing as I could not find one I figure because it was published in 1968 that it was only printed with some color to lower the price. The pages that do have color show blue skies to represent a calm or peaceful outside, and lots of bright colors at things like the railroad station. The illustrations are full of thick lines to make it pop to the reader. One picture in particular that I liked was the kitchen. There is bread being pulled out of the oven diagonally, showing the motion of it being taken out. Also the background is yellow with yellow cans on the table and a lady with blonde yellow hair and it makes the reader happy, while making the home's kitchen feel like a good place to be.

I was definitely not a fan of this ABC book by Allan Moak. The reading age for this book I think is early childhood up to kindergarten. It can possibly stretch to first grade. one of the issues I have with this book is the words the author uses. For example the author uses "Excavate" for E and "Yuletide" for Y. I am a 20 year old junior and even I had to figure out what the exact meaning and pronunciation for 'Yuletide" was. If I had issues, I know that young children would have issues as well. The author should have used better diction that was age appropriate. Even though there is pictures to describe the word, it didn't help. Another issue I had with this book is the illustrations. i thought the illustrations didn't fit the diction. Since the paintings were so childish, the diction should have been to. the author uses sophisticated diction with sloppy illustrations to parallel it.
