The Peterson field guide series were an important part of my early learning experiences in natural history. Roger Tory Peterson provided an immeasurable wealth of knowledge by means of identification arrows indicating salient features that distinguish similar species in the field. The "most wanted" animals that I would still like to see in the wild: Badger, Wolverine, Cougar, Jaguar and Polar Bear (all from a safe distance).

Very detailed guidebook - contains color illustrations, photographs, sections for animals and skulls and accounts for distribution, habits and ecology. I will say this and related field guides could sort species by region then by taxa, but some things can't be helped. I will most likely reread this tome as necessary.
