A wordless children's graphic novel and/or picture book about a farm boy who sees a silver flying horse. Is it real? Well, he tells his Dad, who punishes him for lying. But we know differently. We have actually seen the horse, who carries the boy all across the country, giving him the opportunity to help other isolated kids in need. It's a great fantasy story of escape from the every day, which reminded me of the escape fantasies of superheroes and knights in shining armor, always a dream for kids. Spoiler alert: One day the boy and horse are hit by missiles--reality intercedes, as it will. War. And the boy is found by his parents lying unconscious in the yard outside the house. He recovers and they give him a pony, a place somewhere in the middle between the fantasy of a winger flying pony and the farm. Another kind of dream come true. Here's a few images: Ward published more than 200 books. His first wordless graphic novel came out in 1929. This book was published in 1973. The drawing is really good, the story less remarkable, but I think it could be the occasion for fun analysis of what is going on in the black and white drawings. I rate this 3.5 or so, rounded up.

Oh, internet...how I love you. I was recently reminded of this book that I read in Kindergarten and first grade. It is in black and white wonderful drawings and has no words. According to Amazon, it's 190 some pages. I remember checking it out frequently to look at the pictures of a boy and his adventures with a Pegasus but not ever being sure if it was true or a dream. I HAD to buy it. When I do, I will update the review with a few more pics.
