Love this book. What a story! I love a story about kindness An Ant starts out a chain of events. He climbed the top of a grass stalk to be blown off it into a pond where he's stuck on a stick. He begs a passing grumpy old turtle for help and he can't be expected to save everybody or there would be no time to relax. The turtle walks over a rock and flips on his back, stuck. So, it goes the whole book. There is a bird next, then a giraffe, a lion and a rhino. They all have reasons for not helping the other person. Then they are stuck and don't get any help. I guess it's a take on the good samaritan. Finally, a friendly elephant comes along and he helps them all. He saves the ant and the ant actually thanks him. He saves the turtle, the bird, the giraffe, the lion and the rhino and none of them thank him. Some of them are even ungrateful saying things like 'it took you long enough'. Like wow, but it all rolls off the elephant. He is feeling pretty good when he falls into a ravine and becomes stuck. He bellows for help. It's the ant that comes to his rescue and you have to read the book to find out how the ant gets him out. It's a book about helping others with joy in your heart. It's a great story. It's one of my favorites that Bill did. It works well and I love that elephant. My brother is like the elephant. The nephew couldn't believe how rude the animals were when they got free. Even he noticed they didn't thank the elephant. He loved the ending and thought this was a great story. He didn't like needing help either. I told him he would be like the lion and just laugh at someone in need of help and he said that no, he would help someone in need. He gave this 4 stars. He was into this story.

3* art 3* story Bill Peet is a bit wordy for Squirt yet, but I'm hoping he grows into him, because there's so many titles I want to read to him. This is one of the shorter books, and has a great message about kindness.
