Review # 1 was written on 2018-08-27 00:00:00 Hilda Corbett Phenomenal oral history of both career and politically-appointed female ambassadors! A very inspiring book and yet astonishing to read how they were able to overcome immense discrimination....and not from the foreign countries they worked in, rather from the State Dept, the organization they worked for! For example, women had to give up their careers prior to the 1970s once they decided to marry. Additionally, women married to male diplomats were also rated on the quality of their home dining and entertainment skills. Overall it highlighted that there still remain issues for women being recognized and promoted at the same level as their male colleagues for superior performance. But there are many fascinating stories of the wars and political events the ambassadors interviewed worked during that time, which any history lover will enjoy! |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-01-03 00:00:00 Jeremiah Sauerhafer Absolutely wonderful resource. Oral histories gathered together on a nearly seamless fashion. It is a history of both the women's movement and also our own State Department. |
