Review # 1 was written on 2012-12-24 00:00:00 John Wilson I have read some of Reviel Netz's books on how the ancient greek mathematicians dealt with math problems with the use of geometrical diagrams. Netz argues on these books on the pros and cons that derive from said diagrams. In this book, he goes beyond this theme into the next level, about how arabic mathematicians became both the best disciples of the greeks, as well as their best continuators. Netz argues about the importance of jonian mathematicians, like Archimedes, that influenced the thinking of arabic academics in their evolution of math, from geometrical diagrams into the invention of equations, from the limitations of the set of rational numbers into the creation and discovery of a new set of numbers the algebraic numbers. Netz is not a mathematician, he is a specialist of classical greek texts and the line of thought of classical greek thinkers. This book is a joy to read, as well as a rare gem to be found on its subject matter.
