Review # 1 was written on 2015-05-01 00:00:00 Dale Hoover This is a decent introduction to and overview of the Red Planet. The book consists of several chapters, each covering things like the history of observation and exploration, various notable features of Mars, and the future of planetary exploration. Myriads of photos accompany each paragraph. Sure, most of these are probably available at JPL or NASA, one could easily spend many hours sifting through the thousands of images online and then be left with the task of interpreting their context. The book saves the research-disinclined that task. It did have a few shortcomings, mostly in editing. One paragraph abruptly ends, not to be picked up anywhere else. I noticed a few typos, which should have been absent given the amount of actual text in the book. One image was identified as the western flank of Olympus Mons, when it was clearly that mountain's summit crater. The final chapter presented 3D images--the book states, both on the cover, and in that chapter's introductory page, that 3D glasses are included, but an exhaustive search failed to find mine. Also, I thought the book could have and should have been much longer. So I'm still looking for something that would constitute a comprehensive atlas of Mars.

Review # 2 was written on 2016-09-18 00:00:00 Carolina Scardine Clearly written so that just about any layperson can comprehend the magnificent journey of the Galileo spacecraft and appreciate the astounding scientific advancements made possible by this Deep Space voyager. Another must read.
