My niece, Meredith, is a third grade teacher, and she puts a moment of silence to great use when her students are beginning to spin out of control. "Stop!" she says, putting a hand out in front of her like the Supremes singing, "Stop, in the name of love!" Then she says, "Take a deep breath," and inhales. Then she taps the fingers of one hand to the side of her head, counting out loud to five. Then she slowly exhales. The kids inhale and exhale right along with her."
