Review # 1 was written on 2010-03-23 00:00:00 Peter Chiu There are some wonderful insights here into life in different black communities in Nova Scotia. Some of the stories are absolutely riveting and wonderfully written. What I found distracting though was the random asides - delving into historical context that sometimes provided fascinating and relevant information, but sometimes did not. These were often abrupt and disrupted the flow of the narrative. I actually think that part of her conclusion would have made a great introduction - of the journey of self-discovery that required a journey into the past. This would have served as a great bridge between reminiscences and the mini history lessons.

Review # 2 was written on 2013-08-28 00:00:00 Rodolphe Gautier This is the second time I've read this book, my first encounter was as a first-year undergrad in my first history class (Atlantic World) and I was completely fascinated by the idea of racial fluidity as well as the give and take of the process of conquest. 14 years later, while most of the information is no longer new, I still appreciate Cope's straightforward overview that calls into question Spanish dominance in colonial Latin America and highlighting the way that power, race, and class are all negotiated concepts.
