Satchmo's blues is a historical fiction book about Louis Armstrong and his first real cornet. In the book, Louis sells discarded onions (which he cut the bad parts out of) to restaurants for five cents a bag. He saved the money until he had enough to buy a dented old cornet from a pawnshop window. He practices playing until his music is good enough to start recording at 21 years of age. I really enjoyed this book. The story was great and the illustrations are rich and beautiful. I highly recommend this book! This book would be good to read aloud to 2nd through 4th grades. It would be good for several subjects - history, music, math (the money that Louis saves and keeps track of) and literature. It's also a good book to drive home the fact that hard work and saving money brings a reward at the end.
