Hmmm... This one is tough. I liked the idea of it and the bright pictures of it, but did not love it overall. I found the pages were super busy - too busy for me and I am generally OK with a fair amount of visual clutter. I also found that the wording was old-fashioned - I have been in many ensembles but rarely ever hear the phrases 'quaver and semiquaver'. Yes, like most of us involved in music I know what those phrases mean, but really the only people I ever hear use them are those who are retired or close to retired. I am also somewhat skeptical about how much children would actually learn if just handed this book and told to have fun. I am a strong believer in experiential learning and meeting learners at their level, so am not necessarily entrenched in structured teaching and learning. But, this book is neither experiential nor learner directed. It really does seem like handing a child a book and saying 'have fun with that, let me know how it goes.' Yes, some children might do well with that, but those with no background in music at all? Hmmm... Hand them a book on Egyptian hieroglyphs with the same format and I would still be skeptical on how far along they get. If, on the other hand, an adult worked with the child on the understanding that might well work, but in that case, I think there would be better ways to do it, you know, for example, actually teaching the music with actual singing and/or instruments. The book is a good idea with bright pictures, but overall did not work for me.

Great read for deciding on an instrument, choosing a teacher, and how to handle wanting to quit but not enough ideas for building a love for music outside of playing an instrument.
