A nice illustrated selection of Dickinson poems, within a frame narrative about her sister Lavinia finding them after her death. The title comes from this stanza: This is my letter to the World That never wrote to Me-- The simple News that Nature told-- With tender Majesty The book furthers a narrative about Dickinson that's not entirely true--that no one knew she was writing these poems. The main drawback, though, is that because the poems don't have clear demarcations between them it can be hard to tell where one starts and the next one begins. But it's always a pleasure to read Dickinson and the illustrations are just lovely. Dickinson is in each one-- riding a bee (in "To make a prairie it takes a clover and one bee") or glimpsed through keyhole ("The Way I read a Letter's-- this/'Tis first I lock the Door--") or writing with a bird on her shoulder in "'Hope' is the thing with feathers."

A mixture of narrative and poetry, this is complex for a kids' book. It also begins at the end, when Emily dies, but it makes sense for the story since Emily's work was not known until after her death. It's not for every kid, but it is well done and good for kids who are ready to be introduced to Dickinson or want to know more about her.
