Review # 1 was written on 2007-05-20 00:00:00 Brandon minor Betty Neels is a beautifully old-fashioned writer, whose stories seem like the natural outgrowth of those of Laura Ingalls Wilder. This is a compilation of two short novels (all of her novels are short) and I have finished the first one and I'm starting on the second. I would guess that the problem you run into when crafting such simple, sweet books is making the characters real and relatable. The heroine of the first novel was surprisingly multi-faceted for such a short novel, and her journey was wholly believable. The most impressive thing about this book was its sense of timelessness. It could have been set in 1850, 1950, or 2007. It's a pleasure to read such an 'immortal' book. Now I look forward to delving into 169 (!!!) more Betty Neels books! |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-03-25 00:00:00 Anthony Reyna I'm not sure why I read Neels' books. They pretty much all have variations of the same plot. There is an English/Scottish/Welsh/etc. nurse/secretary/assistant/etc who works in the hospital/clinic/etc and there is ALWAYS a very successful, rich Dutch Doctor who is a world renown specialist. They fall in love, but neither knows the others feelings until the last page of the book when one of them (usually the guy) declares it. All that said, there is something very sweet about her romances. Gentle and sweet is how I would describe them. |
