I didn't read the first book so I don't know how these two came together but they were a lovely couple. I loved their jealousy and possessiveness and all the angst. Hero was so bitter but he was crippled and wheelchair bound so it all made sense. His wife hires a physiotherapist a pretty young woman who wins hero over and heroine is feeling heartbroken and jealous. Poor Stacy she was a lovely heroine. She was a great wife and mother she didn't deserve Cord's contempt. Cord was a cruel hero but he loved Stacy and his son. It was his pain that made him cruel. Great old school vintage Harlequin!

He was simply there, near enough that she could have touched him with only the slightest movement of her hand. But she didnt. His previous rejections of any physical contact with her were too painfully branded in her heart. Any touch or caress would come first from Cord or not at all. "For Bitter or Worse" is the continuation of the story of Stacy and Cord. Keep your tissues ready. This will tear your heart out, and then slowly sew it back in. So I cheated. I skipped book 2-3 to read 4, because I was really eager to know what happened to Cord and Stacy. And it was..wow. Our book is set a few years after the first book. Cord and Stacy now have a young son, and had been happily married, until an airline accident left Cord crippled and wheelchair bound. He has been unable to walk, and due to frustration and anger, has started lashing out at everyone, especially Stacy. When our book begins, we see a highly strung Stacy working her ass off, taking care of their son, the ranch, the business and trying to pull Cord out of his misery. Cord on the other hand, is extremely rude and dismissive, and suffering from the anguish of being handicapped. His coping mechanisms include arguments with everyone, taking their love to be born out of familial duty, and cruelly hurting his wife with taunts of his own helplessness and her supposed misfortune. She tries her hardest to explain her feelings, but all is gets is quarrels and heartbreak. Finally, she decides to hire a physiotherapist to help him heal, who turns out to be a young woman. A breath of fresh air, the physiotherapist (named Paula) fights the boorish hero through the insults and self pity, and ultimately makes helps his recovery. The second part of the book deals with a marriage hanging by the thread, and the heroine's jealousy with the OW and her relationship with the hero. A dark eyebrow arched with bitter cynicism. I cant share. What is there for me to share? My wheelchair? Its my prison. His mouth twisted in sardonic amusement. The wheelchair is my prison, yet Im your jailer. Ill never let you go free. I dont want to be free, Stacy protested with a faint catch of pain in her voice. My heart legit broke for Stacy, and all what she had to go through, because Cord was just UNBEARABLE. But she was a strong wife, mother and woman, and her determination made her shine. Adored her! Cord was a tough hero to like, because all he did was snipe at others like a wounded animal (which he technically was). However, in rare moments of tenderness, his inner self emerged and that was the only reason I did not hate him. He really did love Stacy and their family, but our man was too buried in his own sorrow to see the pain he was causing others. There's a lot of miscommunications, cynicism and anger we have to endure as readers, before these two finally decide to give our eyes and tissues a break. What I enjoys about this book were the trials and tribulations we rarely see after a "happily ever after". Usually authors leave it as an open ending, to be imagined in our own colorful minds. However, In this book, we see complex characters dealing with what life has dished out for them. They are flawed and very human. They fight, have distressing and quite anguish filled squabbles, followed by realizations, introspection and before understanding the authenticity of their love, and that it in fact can triumph all. My only complain with the book is that we should have had MORE grovel from the hero, especially with him realizing what the heroine had to go through in the last year, but it was very short and to the point. And I believe they loved each other more than their son, LOL. The OW/ OM jealousy was baseless and just exposed their insecurities. Highly recommend for angst lovers who do not mind crying like a baby. Because I certainly did. Safe 4.5/5
