I have no idea what happened in this book. Selena is an actress who's vacationing in the mountains. She takes a wrong turn and ends up getting rescued by reclusive mountain man Adam. After spending the night in his cabin, she and Adam stumble upon a bunch of Russian spies...or something... *shrugs* This was written back in the Cold War days, when Russian spies were probably a big thing to worry about, but I can't imagine that the plot made much sense even back then. Don't get me wrong, I like a good spy novel and am very capable of suspension of disbelief, but this book was so shallow, and also incredibly fractured. Characters flit from one thing to another, and none of the events ever get dealt with in depth - it's like the author just wanted to cram as much as possible into one slim book. One moment we're kidnapped by spies, then - poof! We're escaping, and - poof! Selena's shot and in hospital, and - poof! We're back in LA, working on her TV series, and the spies are never mentioned again. It did get marginally more believable - ergo more interesting - once the whole spy plot was over and things were focused on Adam and Selena's relationship issues. But overall, I found it shallow and nonsensical. Broadrick's written some good books - for example, Mysterious Mountain Man - but this is not one of them. 2 stars.

Sound of Summer is the 2nd stand-alone romance novel by Annette Broadrick. When actress Selena Stanford takes a wrong turn on her way to Yosemite National Park and ends up bogged in the mud, she hikes up to Adam Conroys mountain cabin in the rain. He takes her in, but is suspicious about her arrival. His suspicion grows when, the following day, her vehicle is missing but her suitcase isnt. But when some men try to kidnap her from his cabin, he concludes she has seen something she shouldnt have, and is in danger. Conroy has retreated from his life as a spy, but he is very attracted to Selena and uses his old contacts to make sure she is safe. But their lives are so different: he a hermit, she an actress; surely they cant act on their mutual attraction? Broadrick gives us an original plot with a few twists, and a couple of feisty characters. A fun read.
