Some days you should just stay in bed and put the covers over your head because only bad terrible horrible things are going to happen. Which is pretty much what happens that fateful Monday morning when Detective Nick Cantello arrives at the Police station to start a regular week. He is quickly told that his partner/bestfriend was killed Friday night after work when they exchanged Nick's car for Julio's motorbike. Julio was shot and killed with the car veering into the Pacific Ocean. Then he finds out that he is going to have a babysitter/bodyguard from the K-9 unit, Officer Lara Nelson. This is a mature romance with people that have lives, careers and past disappointments. They hop into the sack after a couple days but they do have to spend every minute together because Lara is protecting Nick while he is trying to figure out why his partner was murdered. There is a mystery to push the romance forward. Lara has survived a fiance's death and Nick is really alone in his life because he family (who he is not close to) stayed in Italy. Pregnancy 'scare' that is actually secretly desired because they want to make a family and nothing glues a couple together like children (or marriage). The mystery and the K-9 themes are very strong in this romance to the point that I would say that each take up a third of the story. 297 pages and published in 2005 2 stars
