Review # 1 was written on 2008-12-07 00:00:00 Melissa Sheeley I enjoyed both of the books that were included in this volume, but neither was as good as her later, full length novels. Both had good stories and likeable characters. The two stories contained strong paranormal elements. They were good enough that I want to continue with the Protector series. In This Side of Heaven, Cyn Porter is a widow who seeks solitude at her family's home on the beach after an emotionally draining event that was related to her husband's murder. She meets her new neighbor, Nate Hodges, former Navy SEAL, and immediately feels the attraction between them. Nate is determined not to become involved with Cyn because he is waiting for an old enemy who is determined to kill him. Soon it is apparent that his enemy already knows about his neighbor, Cyn, and will use her against Nate. As they become intimately involved, Nate is determined to keep Cyn safe. They must survive the danger they face in order to fulfill a prophecy that is hundreds of years old. The Outcast finds Reece Landry on the run after being convicted of a murder he did not commit. Elizabeth Mallory has been having visions of Reece for months, and she welcomes this fugitive into her home during a snowstorm after he is in a vehicular accident while being transported to prison. Elizabeth knows that Reece is innocent of the crime, and she is determined to help him. Reece is a loner who has never had love in his lfie, and he resists letting Elizabeth close to him. Reece has to learn to trust Elizabeth and depend on her to help clear his name as the two find love together. This Side of Heaven and The Outcast were both good books that were quick to read. I liked The Outcast slightly better than This Side of Heaven. Sam Dundee, who is prominent in some later Protector books, plays a role in The Outcast. I look forward to reading more of the Protector series.
