Casey Fontaine has only wanted to run and grow sugarcane on the family's plantation. She is not your typical 'southern belle' and her ex fiance' felt the same and left her just before her wedding. With her parents gone on a long second honeymoon, her and her brother Jackson are running the plantation. Jacksons friend, Nick Devlin is openning a new riverboat casino in the area. He's a handsome, sexy, and dangerous distraction to Casey. With many turn of events and tragedies, Casey finds herself in Nick's arms and falling in love with him. Nick is a gambler and drifter and has no interest in a wife, family and roots. I really enjoyed this romance story where the independent, caring, strong-willed female character, breaks down those steel-clad walls and ideas of the male character and softens his heart and will. This is the first in the "Raising Cane" series. The book is filled with romance, suspense and intrigue. A great read for those late night, relaxing times. Hope to read the next two.

It was a light, refreshing read, if somewhat repetitive. I don't usually read a-typical romance novels but since this one was set in Alaska, it drew me in. For those who enjoy romance without the bedroom scenes this is a fun and quick read.
