Re The Unexpected Child - Kate Walker brings up book eleven of the From Here to Paternity series in a typical Lord of the Manor marries servant girl romance. This is an utterly standard HP married-for-the-baby's-sake outing. It starts with the 33 yr old Lord of the Local Manor H showing up on a stormy night at the terrace home of the 24 yr old illegitimate daughter of the Manor's former housekeeper. The h is shocked to see the H, the last she heard, his computer company owning and lady buffet sampling self had found a high-society rich woman to get engaged to and the wedding was imminent. The h is also suffering the pangs of unrequited love for the H. When the h was a pre-teen, she was hit by a motorcycle on her way home from school. The H stopped to hold her hand and call for her mother and the h fell in love with his charming blue eyes and kind words while she bled all over his very nice suit. The h was immobile for a while in recovery and the H would visit her with games and some nice conversations about books. When the h turned 18 and the H brought her a bottle of wine to celebrate, the h made a flirty move and the H roughly turned her away after a huge roofie kiss. The h was ashamed and her unmarried and bitter mother hammered the message home that Lords of the Manor don't date the daughters of servants, they use them for a convenience and then go on their merry way. The h strongly suspects that her unknown father is the instigator of just such a liaison with her mother, but her mum was stringently silent on the subject and the only thing the h knows about her father is that his name might be Hilton. This was only revealed during the h's mother's final illness and the h still feels very indebted to the H for his kindness during her mum's illness and death - even after the big rejection when the h turned 18. So in the present, when the slightly drunk H turns up at the h's door on a dark and stormy night and explains that his engagement is over, his fiancee dumped him for another man, the h can't turn the H away. She also won't let him leave due to the weather and his current inebriation. That inebriation doesn't stop the H and h from having a unicorn banishing lurve club event, which results in the very ashamed of herself for taking advantage of a drunken man h leaving a dismissive note the next morning on her way to school. The h is a schoolteacher and to make matters worse, later that afternoon the H shows up just in time to overhear the h dismissing his lady buffet ways and declaring that the H would never be faithful to his wife. This sets off an H and h exchange of harsh words and the two part ways until the h starts vomiting in the mornings and the H walks in on it. The H realizes that the h is preggers and right away starts harping about duty and marriage. The h refuses to marry him at first, but when the H threatens a custody battle and hammers home that the village will expect him to rectify his mistakes, the h caves and the two of them marry. The h is very burdened by the thought that the H had to marry her in a shotgun wedding and very conscious that she is NOT the kind of woman the H's overprotective mother would want for his wife. The h doesn't feel very comfortable as the Local Lady of Manor either, until the annual village Christmas party shows the h that the local villagers are all in full support of the marriage and that the h knows everybody from her school teaching anyways. The H still wants to maintain the pretense of a whirlwind romance, but the h finally breaks down in front of the H's semi-disapproving mother and reveals the whole truth of the situation. The H's mother's reaction isn't shown - she gets no lines and limited page time- but the H is furious, cause his mother names him the bad guy of the piece. This leads the h to more despondency, because she believes the H is pining for his ex-fiance and only sees her as the unsatisfactory brood mare needed to get his child. After some more mopey moments and a fake father's attempt to claim the h is his daughter to get a big financial pay off, the h goes into labor. The H's real feelings for the h become clear as she labors to give birth, but when the H says there will be no more children because of his distress over the hard time the h had, the h misunderstands and thinks the H is going to dump her because she had a daughter. The H is very clear that he loves the baby and doesn't care if it is a boy or a girl, but the h is still being blinded by her fears of the H's ex fiancee. Those fears are exposed when the now single again ex shows up and decides she wants the H back. The woman has no clue the H is married and has a child. When she finds out, she still puts the moves on the H and dismisses the h and baby as the daughter of a skivvy, saying the baby is a trapping device to get a meal ticket out the H. The h rises to the occasion then and firmly puts the ex fiancee in her place, right in front of the H. The H isn't saying too much either way, but as the h makes her big declaration of how much she loves the H, he steps right up to the plate and announces that he loves the baby because the h is her mother and his perfect wife and mate. The OW storms off in a huff, tho the H and h barely notice because they are too busy declaring their eternal love and devotion for the big HEA. This one was cute and a very standard HP outing. KW hits all the major tropes and she moves the book along at a good pace. We readers, like the h, are unsure of the H's motives at first, but KW wraps that up nicely when she has the H declare that he probably always loved the h, but did not think he could have her because of her own prejudices and because of the warnings from his parents and the h's mother about getting involved with the h. KW also has the H find the h's bio father. It seems he was a wealthy guy who had an affair with the h's mum when she was keeping house for him. He was divorcing his wife to go to the h's mother when he was killed and the spiteful near ex wife sent a letter to the h's mum that he was dumping her, so the man died before he knew he was a father. With all the plot threads tied up neatly in a bow and a very nice H declaration of his True Love, KW gives us a nice little HP outing with a fairly believable HEA, so this one is worth the read if you run into it.

Natalie had been in love with Pierce Donellan since she was eleven, and when he came knocking on her door again she just couldn't turn him away. But hadn't considered the possible consequences. When he learned she was pregnant, Pierce insisted on a wedding. But Natalie's unexpected child was the only part of Pierce's heart she was ever likely to possess. Although Pierce did seem determined to make their marriage a real one
