Re White Midnight - KB brings us a second chance seekrit baby story that really doesn't stint on the angst. The h and H were going to run off together when they were teenagers, but the h's evil controlling, social snob grandmother made it look like she had bought H off and the H thought the h was rejecting him because he was poor. Granny fooled them both. When the H leaves after his confrontation of telling evil granny where to go and cursing the h's name, the h chases after him - even tho she has no hope of catching him. Tragically the h is in a bad fall while chasing and her leg is permanently injured. She was also preggers. Her evil granny then tells her that no illegitimate kid will be born to her family, and demands the h terminate. The h refuses and instead marries a 48 year old dying doctor who is very kind, in order to give her baby a name and defy the granny from Hades. Six years later the H shows up at an inn she now owns and there is much fighting and roofie kissing, then wash rinse and repeat about twenty six times and it is all terribly angsty. Finally the H finds out that the h's child is actually his when he see's a picture of the little girl - who had been conveniently off with friends for the majority of the book. The H is ready to be a good dad and he hangs about waiting for the h to explain the dad concept to his daughter. The H is also furious the h did not hunt him down - cause he is a famous rich author now, and the the h is furious cause evil grandma made her think that H bilked granny horridest for ten grand before taking off and dumping the h. The H was convinced that the h rejected him for low social class and that she married a rich man in his place, and he is pretty mean about expressing that. Which the h very poignantly debunks with a ton of dignity as she explains the circumstance of her marriage and that her now deceased hubby was very nice, but dirt poor and still a better person that the gold digging H. Finally they fight enough to verbalize both sides of the story, shout "I still love you" at each other and we get the HEA. Very angsty with a lot of drama and I believed the HEA, but there was just too much back and forth and angst and not enough current resolution, still for a sophmore HP, it is okay.

How could she afford to welcome him home? Amanda had been dangerously naive the summer Drake Daniels raked in a cool ten thousand dollars for leaving her family's Georgia estate and disappearing into the night without her. His betrayal had nearly killed her. For six long years she'd fantasized about confronting him -- to tell him exactly what she thought of him. But face-to-face her accusations were powerless. The sad truth was, her secret fantasies always ended the same impossible way -- with her beating her fists on his hard chest and him holding her tightly, explaining, soothing away the anguish of the horrible years.
