Re Aunt Lucy's Lover - Miranda Lee takes us to pre-integrated Norfolk Island off the coast of Australia in this one. Norfolk Island was initially settled as a penal colony back in Australia's colonial days and up until 2016, Norfolk Island had limited self government and no federal income tax. Currently, declining population and a lower economy has integrated Norfolk with mainland Australia as a result of an Australian government feasibility study. This one starts with our 28 yr old Hotel Public Relations executive h learning that she has inherited a house and a very nice sum of money from her aunt, who recently passed from cancer. The h is shocked, because her divorced, alcoholic mother died when she was twenty and always swore that she was an orphan, abandoned at birth. The h learned of her aunt three months before the story started. A woman showed up at her office at work one day and only gave her first name and claimed she was her mother's older sister. The woman was in shock at the h's appearance and when the h went to do a quick errand for her job, the woman disappeared. The h had tried searching for her aunt, but since she did not have her full name or where she came from, it proved impossible. Then the h received a letter from a solicitor and learned about her aunt's will. The only condition to the will is that Aunt Lucy specified the h is to stay for a month in the aunt's home on Norfolk island and she is to give the man living there house room for the full month. The h suspects that the unknown man is her aunt's lover and there is a lot of speculation from the h about what kind of man he really is. The h doesn't have a very nice opinion of men. Her own father divorced her mother when the h was an infant and pretty much abandoned the h, he did not even show up for her mother's funeral in a show of fatherly support. The h is not a unicorn groomer, she seems to only meet men with an eye to the main chance and as she is now a lady of property and some pretty decent wealth, the h is very aware that she might be a target for fortune hunters. So the h goes to Norfolk island and meets the H, she is utterly astounded. The H is 38 and shirtless for most of the book. He claims he is an aspiring author with a nice book advance, but the island gossip has him pegged as Aunt Lucy's lover. Apparently he used to be a big time commodities dealer and then lost it all and moved to Norfolk island and lived in Aunt Lucy's guesthouse/home for the next three years. (The H is also divorced, his avaricious wife had been cheating on him while he was trying to give her the things she wanted and sadly her picture in a salubrious position got passed around at the H's work. He divorced his adulterous tart and then proceed to wreak havoc among the gold digging female population for the next few years, until his big economic bust.) There is a lot of snappy arguments between the H and h, both of them believe the other is the conniving woman/slime slurper gigolo type. However there is a fierce Lurve Force Mojo Tension between them and the h has many, many questions about her past. The H and the other islanders assume the h is going to throw over her Sidney life for the island, but the h isn't too sure about that. As the H and h travel around the island and we get the HP travelogue bits, they start to form some small connections and as this is ML, they finally give into the purple passion moments. The h learns to love Aunt Lucy's home and garden and tho she will have to travel back to Sydney to close down her former life, she is convinced she and the H can make a go of things. When the H overhears the h talking to her male secretary about returning to work and he DOESN'T overhear her tell her secretary she is quitting her job, he leaps to the conclusion that the h was only using him for stud service while on the island and that she is banging her male secretary every chance she gets. The h is flabbergasted and furious and then utterly livid when the H reveals that in Aunt Lucy's final morphine haze during her last illness she admitted that her cheating husband was the h's father. The stunned h learns that her Aunt Lucy's husband cheated with a lot of ladies, including the h's 18 year old mother. When the h's mother tried to tell Lucy about what happened before she married the cheater, Lucy did not believe her younger sister and went ahead with the wedding. A little while later, Aunt Lucy's slime swiller husband hunted the h's mother down in Australia and had another affair with her, resulting in the h. Aunt Lucy was shocked because she also learned that her husband had a vasectomy, meaning that Aunt Lucy never got to have kids and thought she was infertile. Aunt Lucy was even more shocked to realize that the h looks exactly like her dead husband, who was rumored to have been dumped off the boat on the high seas by a local fisherman with a very pretty wife when he died. This all came out to the H on Lucy's deathbed and the h is furious that the H kept it hidden and lied to her about not knowing anything the whole time she and he had been together, until he got angry and let the whole sorry situation slip. The h kicks the H out and decides to sell the house and go back to Sydney. Some company buys the house and after several weeks of the mopey moments, the h feels a bit badly about that. Then the h gets called up to the Presidential suite of her hotel and the summoner is none other than a very downtrodden and sad H. The H owns the company that bought Aunt Lucy's house, he wasn't as poor as he was rumored to be in his last business loss. Now he wants to give the h back her family home as recompense for not letting her tell her side of the story before dismissing her as a cheating tart and for not revealing the truth about her father. The h has been mopeying about over the H too and she feels she was too hasty in kicking him out and selling off Aunt Lucy's home. So after the big reunion kissing moment, the H clarifies that he never slept with Aunt Lucy and both of them declare their true love forever. We get a little epilogue where the H makes another fortune from his books and the film rights to them. He and the h have a few kids and live in the family home and divide their time between Norfolk and traveling the world for a sweet HP Pink Sparkly HEA. This one was pretty interesting, mainly because of the mystery of the h's family - her stepfather reveals that the h's mother was obsessed with Aunt Lucy's husband all of her life and that is why he dumped them- and because of the mystery about the relationship between Lucy and the H. (Tho it was fairly clear early on that the H was a friend to Lucy and not her lover, ML did a good job of implying that while throwing around a lot of smoke screens for the h.) The Norfolk history and travelogue was interesting too, but the biggest draw was the description of the H's historical novel, where a titled English lord is betrayed and sent off as an Australian convict by his younger brother. So while the h and H were okay to read about, it was the descriptions of the H's novel that really made me keep turning the pages of this story and overall make this a three star HP outing.

When, Jessica wondered, was she ever going to learn that men lied when it came to sex and money? Why, she'd almost fallen for Sebastian Slade's smooth story that he'd wanted nothing more than friendship from her aunt Lucy, before the lonely, wealthy, middle-aged widow had died. Perhaps Sebastian was planning to make love to Jessica, now that she was set to inherit Aunt Lucy's fortune? Jessica was determined to ignore her treacherous longings. Maybe the disturbing attraction she felt toward him would wear off, once she got used to his incredible charm and looks..
