Ellen Wakelin arrives from Normandy ready to put her father's Saxon property in order. The horse master, Connor Brand, continually disconcerts her and her attempts to put down the Saxon ways. As the son of the former owner of the keep, Connor is trying hard to help his people, but Ellen is an unwelcome distraction. When events conspire to force Connor underground with another family, Ellen is taken along. This nearly causes war until the real culprit behind the unrest is uncovered. Then the two can finally bridge the cultural gap to peace for themselves and the land. Several brief love scenes.

It is hard to imagine one day your family being the Lord of the castle and then a war where others come in and take it all away. As the Norman's took away Lyonsbridge from the Brand's. Including killing the parents and one son. There are two remaining brothers. Father Martin now belongs to the church and his older brother, Connor, is the horse master in the castles stables. As the newest Masters come to take over Connor is stunned by the beauty of Lady Ellen. She has come to get all in order for when her father visits. She is independent though and wants to ride off by herself. Connor cannot chance her being hurt and more war breaking out. He promised his mother on her death bed that he would do all he could to keep peace. Following her does not work out so well as he can't keep his lips off her, and she seems to return the feelings. Her cousin Sebastian is with her as well to take care of money matters. And there is the shift bailiff that reminds Ellen of a rat. Sir William seems to notice the younger girls as well. There is hidden forbidden love between the Saxon and Norman, plots by Sebastian, shiftiness in general from Sir William Booth, unique horse knowledge by Connor, a mystery of young Karyn who won't speak and much more.
