I was in a very dull, somber mood and was looking for something light and fun to read as I went through my book collection when spotted this book I'd read a long time back marked as hillarious. So, I started to re-read it. Being a light, hillarious, low-angst romance, it had me laughing and completely changed my mood . For seventy years, the citizens of Serenity have been enduring the repercussions of the ongoing feud between the town's two richest families that started off over the sale of a piece of land, and have reached the end of their tether. An exasperated Judge Willis has confined rancher, (also part-time attorney thanks to his forever feuding family) Brice McCormack and Attorney Prudence Randolph in his chambers with an order to come up with a plan to end the blasted feud. Both, thought the Judge had gone plumb loco because the two usually were stomping around, exchanging hostile looks, accusatory glances and incriminating barbs. Brice has always considered Pru, who's always dressed in power business suits that reminded him of a store-wrapped package, all done up nice and neat with everything matching and nothing out of place, as the opposing attorney, who's always snapping at him over something as if it was her God-given right to do so, in the bargain seeming to enjoy making his life more of a hell for him than any of his family members. Whereas, Pru has always thought of the forever-jeans attired (even in the courtroom) Brice her absolute least favorite person in all of Texas. However, now suddenly confined together in the judge's chambers the two were beginning to noticing in detail things about each other that were sending their hormones berserk. It was Pru's scent. He'd noticed it enough times, smelling up the courtroom. Sometimes it made his insides clench the way they did when he drank ice water too fast. Sometimes it gave him cravings for vanilla wafers, pound cake, or even a vanilla soda over at Dusty's Malt Shop. Today his stomach flipped, and he had a terrible urge for all three. Hellfire, being cooped up with her was driving him nuts. He had to get out of here fast! Pru squirmed in her chair, sliding the black skirt of her perfect black suit up her very perfect thighs. She had on black stockings, and for a moment Brice forgot about feuds and judges and could only think about what was holding those stockings up. Garters? His mouth went bone dry. Pru would look great in a black garter belt and black stockings, especially if that's all she wore. He stole another quick look, mostly because he couldn't help himself. Damn, she had long legs, great calves, terrific thighs and and a tattoo? Brice blinked twice to clear his vision. Yep, it was a tattoo, all right. A rose tattoo peeking out from under the hem of her skirt. Damn! He and Pru had to quit meeting in this blasted room. There was something about Willis's chamber that got him paying attention to and thinking about stuff he would be better off completely ignoring. But, what man could ignore a rose tattoo, black stockings and a garter belt? Prudence watched Brice shove himself out of his chair and walk to the other side of the room. It was actually more of a tramp. He undid the top button of his neat, western-cut, navy shirt and ran his long fingers around the inside of his collar, pulling the material away from his neck. She noticed the skin there was as tanned as his face. It wasn't the deep bronze of late summer but a mere kiss of brown from the sun of early spring. Kiss? She licked her suddenly dry lips and stared at Brice's neck. Where had this kiss stuff come from? He flexed his shoulders as if attempting to ease some tension building there. It might have worked for him, but the simple gesture did nothing to ease the tension building in Prudence. This was crazy. Brice was her arch rival, the person who'd made her life miserable for as long as she could remember. He was the person her father had always held up as an example of what she should be. Since her father was the unofficial head of the Randolphs and she his only child, she had to be as good or better than a McCormack ever even thought about being. And that meant better than Brice-the-perfect, son of the unofficial head of the Half-Circle. Considering all that, she had never before actually thought of Brice's neckexcept maybe in the context of putting a noose around it and pulling tight. She definitely never thought about it in relation to a kiss. She swallowed. It must be their current confined circumstance. In court she had no problem ignoring his brown eyes, the tiny scar above his left brow, the way his black hair curled slightly over the back of his collar, his rugged build that was nothing like those of the businessmen she came in contact with. But today he reminded her of the cattle he raisedstrong, solid, prime, grade-A beef. Suddenly, she had the urge to sink her teeth into his butt. Damn! She had to get out of this room! And, while they were noticing such things about one another, the judge also noticed something that had him take matters into his own hands to tell them he was marrying the two of them in three days. "Unless you two can come up with an alternative idea to ending this feud, or you don't mind holding all future family reunions in the county lockup, you're getting married in three days and your families are going to believe you are madly in love." He banged his fist against the desk. "This case is closed." And, since Judge Willis didn't make idle threats, which meant Serenity would soon be losing a big chunk of its population to the county jail, they had no other choice than to marry each other. Their married life kicks off with one amusing incident after another starting with their argument over where they were going to live because a city slicker like Pru wasn't going to live on a ranch, that too, one that belonged to McCormack, and Brice, who lived on vast, rolling land wasn't going to live in town in the little boxes called apartments. When they'd reached an impasse, Brice decides to deed Pru a house on a land he'd recently purchased to expand his ranch, which was not technically McCormack land as yet. Having no clue what she'd really been deeded, Pru was beginning to turn warm and fuzzy over his grand gesture. The discovery she makes was hillarious and so was the cow rescue scene followed by few others. I liked Brice and Pru a lot and loved how they began to fall for the other. There were few angsty moments toward the end when Pru, on finding evidence in favor of her family and against McCormacks, makes the mistake of showing it to her father without telling Brice, therefore upsetting and angering Brice who asks her to leave their home. But, overall it was a fun and enjoyable read. Only wish it had a sweet epilogue.

Basically, what would have happened if Romeo and Juliet had been forced to get married to stop the feud between their family rather than marry for love. The McCormack and Randolph feud in Serenity, Texas was very well known. The families hated each other and often ended up in court over an entire number of small issues. Judge Willis has had enough. It is time to end this feud and he knows just the two to do it. Brice McCormack and Prudence Randolph are in line to be the heads of each of their respective families, and each hate each other because family comes first. It comes as quite a shock to both of them when they are ordered by the well respected judge to wed and claim to be madly in love with each other. Both think it is ridiculous and try to come up with something else to end the family feud to avoid marriage, but in the end nothing else comes to mind and the two enter into a marriage neither wanted but slowly become accustomed to. One sweet wedding kiss and all bets are off. This story had just the right amount of humor, intrigue, romance, and realism that is needed in a good romance novel. Brice and Prudence are both characters that the reader can relate to and both are strong willed without being annoying. I picked up this book because the title intrigued me and once I read the summary I knew that I had to read it and see what was going on. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I laughed out loud and really enjoyed the whole thing. What a fun little story.
