DNF because not for me. If I were a divorced, now single thirty-two-year-old woman whose relationship had broken up because my globetrotting husband would rather lose me than have a baby, and said ex then showed up with a toddler - obviously conceived shortly after our divorce - in tow, I would feel a profound sense of betrayal, regardless of how guilty said ex actually was of anything besides failure to correctly use birth control. Marnie isn't really allowed to experience that betrayal and anger for very long, though, before the author starts loading up the backstory to make the accident baby totally not Tom's fault, and the toddler himself a total deus ex machina allowing Marnie to get her beloved husband and a child for Christmas without having to sabotage her birth control or do anything else a reader might find unpalatable. I'm just not very interested in that kind of bland wish fulfillment right now - I want a little more angst in my reading.

It's got to be at least 25+ years since I read a real Harlequin romance novel. I always remember them being sweet and mushy with a happy ending (oh course the Cinderella story). This was in a free book pile at the local library and I like to read books of the season so I picked it up and was pleasantly surprised! Marnie and Tom were high school sweethearts who married and later divorced. It's the holiday's and Tom comes back home with a little present (his son) to celebrate what might be Granny's last Christmas. The desire between Marnie and Tom has not subsided after being divorced 4 years. Set in a small but growing town in TN, the story surprised me with some fun characters - feisty Granny and her doctor friend are not boring old senior citizens and Marnie is a savvy businesswoman who owns a local book and gift store and her own home. Issues of children, careers family squabbles, and small time politics are discussed. The other surprise was that they actually DID IT twice which is another thing I don't remember actually happening in past Harlequin books. Guess everything is getting more modern. Overall, I enjoyed this romance story set at Christmas time with of course a happy ending! Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of Christmas you need a little feel good downtime to relax and dream.
