Patrick and Suzanne share a lot in common. They are both mistakes and they mirror one another. Patrick is laid up w/ a broken leg and he needs an assistant to help w/ a proposal so that he can work towards that VP position that he so desires. Suzanne the ever efficient secretary volunteers for the position as her boss is out of town and she could use the money. So off to work these two go. There really arent a lot of sparks b/w them it is more a comfortable companionship as they are so alike. Soon Patrick becomes interested in her and she returns the favor, IMHO it didnt hurt that her current live in guy is an author that Patrick reads. As far as Patrick is concerned she has a man, but that doesnt stop him from wanting Suzanne for himself. He ends up inviting her to stay for a weekend when they are out of town in meetings. Wasnt it odd that they described Washington as the place where promises are broken because that is EXACTLY what happens? Suzanne is upfront about her lack of protection and Patrick agrees that he will take care of it. Then of course he wants to go w/out one time. He thinks about how he is stronger than her and could use force but doesnt think that will be necessary, yet she did struggle some. But he wants to give her this and he never stops to think about the consequences or the repercussions. And you know there will be some as there is more to go in the story. So the right thing is done by all and Patrick goes away for two years for the India trip he makes excuses for why she cant come but then he NEVER asks her again if she would join him. He never gave them a chance. Yet he conveniently falls in love w/ a 19 year old to his 30 something year old self. The beginning of the book was really intriguing but then when Patrick comes back w/ his news.I just wanted to kick him and I wouldnt have minded a nice big Teflon skillet as it is stick proof to whack him w/. It seemed to me that her problems began and ended w/ Patrick and his childish need to do that irresponsible act and then act as though others could take care of the problem. I could NOT get past the fact that he did that and then she accepts blame and has to be the responsible one again. It didnt seem to matter that she was finally gaining in her dreams and then he knocked her back down for another 18 years at least! Then for him to come back and claim he was in love w/ a 19 year old who is now dictating to him about what he needs to do in his marriage.YUCK! Her parents even seemed to be okay w/ the fact that their precious daughter has taken up w/ a married older man Im guessing his success is worth more. I know that Patrick pointed out that he wasnt using Suzanne in the appointment, but I wonder if he sort of was using her as the other wouldnt have been such a great thing for what he wanted, and then suddenly he realizes whom he really does love. I didnt like his excuse for loving the 19 year old either it seemed to border on creepy and predatorish (yeah new word). I felt like Patrick intentionally set out to do that to Suzanne and he saw the signs that she was ripe for it as well! Lets not forget the fact that when he took up w/ Suzanne he thought she had another man and was in fact, living w/ him this didnt stop him either. Does this bode well for their future? It also seemed like some other things changed in the second half of the story. I always felt like Suzanne didnt talk about live in man because she didnt want to and she was respecting his privacy and later she claims she didnt because she sensed that Patrick was jealous now where did that come from? It also bothered me that he gushes about the OW: Never before had he seemed this animated, never before had his smile seemed so unforced, had his eyes sparkled this green. The gray that dulled them when he looked at her, at their child, vanished when he spoke of this other woman. I thought at the end that his eyes would sparkle green when he is looking at her and/or their child, alas I was disappointed. I felt like some settling went into this r/s and I wasnt happy. He is overly concerned about this childs feelings and not so much about Suzannes as she can take care of herself, never mind the little bundle of joy these two created in his act of juvenile rebellion/childishness! Those glasses were a failure for me here. Im sorry I will take the domineering Alpha over this guy any day of the week and twice on Sunday, thank you very much!!!!!

This was so refreshing and so intriguing before self-destruction or should I say murder is committed on the story. Maybe the author had a story to tell and maybe she felt humans (men) can behave in a certain incomprehensible (read extremely selfish and moronic) way and should be excused/taken back.. But I wish she'd done few things differently. May do a detailed review later.
