Re By Dreams Betrayed - Sandra Marton brings a hint of the mystic into this basic boss/secretary story and this is the first book in a connected SM duology. This h, who had an affair with her old boss and got dumped five years earlier, is having strange dreams about a hidden man. The dreams invoke a kind of fear/longing response in her soul and the are very vivid. So much that sometimes her sleep is disturbed and the h is filled with fearful longing but doesn't see the hidden man's beloved face. The h currently works for the slave driver H. She doesn't mind, she is paid well and she shares a nice apartment with another girl in Manhattan. The H is the typical lady buffet bully Alpha who continually asks the h to work overtime and when the h asks to take a long weekend, he denies her the time and assumes she is tarting about with some man whom he also thinks she lives with. The h was actually gong to go for quick free trip with her female roommate to the Bahamas, but the H is so obnoxious about it, she lets it go. Then she notices the H looks very tired and he seems to be very worried about the new lady in his life, who shows up at the office and tells the H she won't be going to Europe. The H and h end up working very late one night and she has to cancel a date. The H takes her out for pizza and the h realizes that the H is unseen man in her dreams and all of the sudden she is in love. Then the h gets told she either transfers to Rome as the H's secretary or she loses her job. She has no option but to go as her roommate, who is a flight attendant, is taking an overseas route and has to move out and if the h has no comparable salary to what she currently makes, she can't stay in her apartment. So we all go to Rome and the H has the h moved up to first class because the evil personnel manager in the New York office booked her in economy. The H and h have flats in the same building and it soon becomes obvious that the H has designs on the h. There is an Italian executive who is also in the Rome office and he is interested in the h too, but when he goes to ask the h out, the H claims they have to work late. Then the H takes her out that night and tells her he loves her. She loves him too, but past experience and the H's own numerous rose deliveries that the h herself has arranged remind the h that male bosses always use the word love as a code word for what they really want, which is more along the lines of satin sheets and pounding passion. The h reminds the H of the hordes of ladies he has had traipsing through his office and he retaliates with her non-existent lover (the old roommate,) as the h still hasn't corrected his assumption that she lived with a man. The h tries to leave and falls down and starts crying and the H sweeps her off her feet to carry her back to their flats. They don't have a big lurve club moment tho, cause the h needs some time and then the H has to go off on business. The h is dreaming about the H and when he gets back, he is so tired he falls asleep in the h's flat and the h has to wake him when he has a very intense nightmare. So both of them are having really vivid dreams, but the h doesn't know what the H is dreaming of. The finally have a big lurve mojo moment and the h is in love and the H loves her back and everything is hunky dory cause the H gives the h violets, which she had dreamed about. Except the H has to rush back to New York for a potential failed merger and the h is on her own for few days. When the H returns, he doesn't come to find her or let her know he is back. The h hears his voice, (he has the flat above hers,) and the h rushes up to see him, but he is with the woman who refused to go to Europe with him originally. The h overhears them talking and it sounds like they are reunited lovers and the H explains that he doesn't know how to tell the h. She rushes off and goes back to New York, figuring she just got played for the second time with a boss. The h gets a job with a wealthy reclusive elderly philanthropist and a few months go by. She is over having a huge mopey moment but she is suddenly having really intense dreams about the H again, and thinks she might be needing some therapy. She has a new place and is getting paid more than what she was before, so she is doing okay financially and she seems to be moving on with her career. She gets called by her boss to go a corporate meeting and when she shows up, the H is the firm's new CEO. The h tries to leave, but she has to stay for the meeting and then the H corners her and yells at her for running off on him and going back to her former lover. Except she did not have a former lover and the h explains about the roommate and also that the H is cheating slime blobule cause she heard him tell his OW that he was taking her to bed right before she left Rome. The H explains that the woman he had in his flat was his younger half sister who had fallen in love with some no-hoper and wouldn't go to Rome when he wanted to break them up. (This half sister is the h of SM's next book.) Then the sister found out the guy she liked was real slime slurper and came back to Rome with the H when he finished his merger in NYC and got the new CEO position. The H and h still love each other and now that everything is explained, the H can't wait to marry her. In fact he announced he was marrying the h at the merger meeting and then the h left him, so he has been an unhappy camper dreaming about the h as she was dreaming about him. They decide to marry right away and take a honeymoon in Rome and so we leave them kissing passionately on the way to the marriage license office for the big HEA. This one was okay, the dream thing was interesting, tho SM really only hints that they are psychic dreams rather than out right says it. I wasn't really keen on the H telling his half sister he was taking her to bed, that part was a big icky once you realize who she is, but SM needed something real convincing to make the h leave, so there you go. This one was a pretty standard HP outing and a fairly fast read, the HEA was believable and this book is the first HP where the paranormal makes an appearance. Other books with psychic phenomena will follow, the 90's was a big experimental time for HPlandia, so overall this one is a different but interesting HPlandia experience.

This kept my interest. Kristin works for Seth but resists knowing him since once 5 years ago she fell in love with her boss and had an affair and he left her and she lost her job etc. Here Seth is reassigned to Rome and Kristin who has begun to be attracted to him decides not to go with him but her financial situation forces her to go to keep her job. They fall in love and have an affair but she catches him apparently cheating on her and runs home. Needless to say this is a Harlequin so he wasn't really cheating. The other girl was his sister. Standard story but was well done and well written. Kristin was not a doormat and Seth was not too arrogant. It held my interest.
