I can see why people couldn't hate this guy when he almost slept with the OW TWICE. Look, I don't condone cheating, I am usually very black and white. But I am willing to act like an adult and tread on the grey side for this book. I think the MCs needed some breathing space, and if they did, they could've spared themselves the whole drama and the divorce and the potential cheating to begin with. But then, we'll have no book. I don't even think the hero was really lusting after the OW after reading the whole book. He is an ordinary man whose wife hero-worships him. He's scared shit. It IS a burden, he was scared of failing her and ultimately that's what he does. Now let's make it clear, as far as cheating goes, he did NOT commit adultery. To be honest not even emotionally because he didn't really give the OW that place in mind. I think he was lusting after her because he could do that without the burden of having the "golden wings". What made me forgive him and trust in his love was the fact that he couldn't do it because he thought about his wife. If the love for someone stops you from touching someone else, that truly is great love because love and lust is not always the same. For this guy, clearly it was the same thing, and that belonged to his wife. The OW clearly WAS a homewrecker, she NEVER cared about his marriage, she wanted him and didn't care who was hurt in the process. But the MCs, these two loved each other so much that they were ready to let the other one move on with life, even if the very thought itself could kill them. Jake would have fully accepted the baby as his even if it was biologically not his. He is truly evolved into a very very fair character. No double standard there whatsoever. And Kelly, stupid stupid sweet woman, basically pushes Jake in the OW's arm and almost kills him in the process. The guilt the sweet woman faced after. For hurting her husband, for not believing him the first time, for all his suffering. But I decided to be with her on this one. Jake did deserve the punishment. It was his penance. And Kelly, even though she practically pushed Jake in the OW's arm, I guess that's the only way she could move on herself. And Jake, he was completely forgiven by me while reading his thought when he was with the OW the second time. How he could see that in his mind it was the ultimate betrayal, and he could never ever go back and face Kelly if he goes along with it. That is decency, honour and love. We all make mistakes. The hero in this book is mere mortal. He didn't, couldn't cheat. He paid a huge price for a moment of misguided lust. But it's what he did after, that counts. He changed, he loved his wife more and he fell completely apart in front of the OW, and reached to his wife without caring anything about his image, it was actually endearing, not hero-like at all, but at the same time totally worthy of a hero. A hero who's not afraid to show his weakness to the loved one, and not scared to reach out for help. And how he spoke his mind, that he was still married to Kelly divorce or no divorce is what I always scream about when I demand celibacy during separation. This guy spoke my mind. He wanted his wife, loved her, wanted the marriage back, therefore he was still married to his wife, and if he slept with the OW, THAT link, would be gone, he wouldn't have ANYTHING valuable to offer to his wife anymore. I actually cried reading that chapter. My motto is "F**K cheaters", but I am glad I read this book, he definitely earned his second chance.

[This story is one of those where the H strays n almost cheats on the h, his wife of 8 years. They got married when quite young. She lets go of her college dreams n taking up dead end jobs leaving him free to build his career as a journalist. As years pile on he leaves her behind mentally, emotionally, intellectually, too busy with his life n career to give her back as much as he takes from her. And then most unforgivably he falls in lust with a colleague of his. She comes to know via his other colleagues as people were already betting on his falling for this ow. He apparently got cold feet at the last moment but then has no way to prove it. The story actually opens on the day their divorce gets finalized. She is having a divorce-celebration party and he walks in uninvited. She has started college, has her own apartment, new friends, new hairstyle, new clothes. She decides to be friendly and amicable, even pointing out possible hookups for him. Anyways they end up in bed together that night as she decides to celebrate her new life with goodbye sex with her old husband! He goes off on another assignment, gets shot n hospitalized. She ends up taking him to her place as he has no one else to take care of him. So they bond all over again but she accepts him only as a brother. She is pregnant now btw and doesnt confirm to him whether he is the father or not. She also has her dishy professor dropping in now and then much to his chagrin and also gives her blessing to his supposed romance with the ow. (This author does the sweetest om btw). What was totally n freakily different was the last part. She keeps pushing him onto the ow again n again. So much so that he, in pique decides to do just that n take the ow to bed. So after a date he goes to this ladys place for a second try but instead of getting turned on goes to pieces and has a nervous meltdown (in a most un-hero like fashion I must say). Somehow he manages to call the h to come and fetch him, who rushes in and rescues him. I dont know if the author meant this scene to be semi comic but it totally had me in splits. Clinical depression, a first in a HP for me, followed for the poor guy. The H is a sweet easy going charmer, is never villainised in the story and you do feel sorry for him on several occasions.
